Meet The Instructors
Tim Murphy, President of Murphy Pavement Technology, Inc., promotes best practices within the asphalt industry on local, regional, and national levels. He works collaboratively with academia, agencies, associations, consultants, contractors, and material suppliers, to ensure asphalt quality at the most economical means possible. He co-authored “MS-22 Construction of Hot Mix Asphalt Pavements” for the Asphalt Institute and currently travels the country training asphalt professionals and practitioners for the National Highway Institute on asphalt plant production and workmanship.

Day 1: January 10 (Friday), 2025: Mixture Design
- Asphalt mix design, volumetrics and specifications (national and local)
- Marshall and Superpave mix design defined and compared
- Stone-matrix asphalt (SMA), warm-mix asphalt (WMA) technologies, RAP mixes
- Mixture selection for local and state routes
- Hands on mix design workshop
- Target Audience: City, state, and county materials engineers, lab technicians, consultants performing QA, QC managers
Day 2: January 17 (Friday), 2025: Asphalt Production Facilities and Quality
- QC and process control (local and national specs)
- Analyzing acceptance test strips, reproportioning and full production
- Troubleshooting issues with mix design and production
- Target Audience: City, state, and county materials engineers, field technicians, inspectors, consultants performing QA, QC managers
Day 3: January 24 (Friday), 2025: Asphalt Construction Workmanship
- Surface preparation
- Mixture delivery and placement
- Compaction including joint construction
- Combating segregation
- Density and smoothness
- Target Audience: City, state, and county construction and materials engineers, field technicians, inspectors, consultants performing QA, contractors’ superintendents, foreman, and key personnel
