Our team recently had the opportunity to visit three projects in the City of Phoenix alongside Tim Murphy. These projects showcase the City of Phoenix’s commitment to improving urban infrastructure, enhancing connectivity, and implementing sustainable paving practices across various neighborhoods.
Project 1: 55th Avenue Improvement
- π Location: 55th Avenue (Ph. 1 – Indian School Rd to Camelback Rd; Ph. 2 – Osborn Rd to Indian School Rd), Phoenix
- π§ Project Type: Local Agency (City) Resurfacing
- π Notable Features:
- Minimal deficiencies and close coordination among all the stakeholders and necessary parties involved, facilitating on-time project completion
- Innovative use of street maintenance team to address severely deteriorated areas

Project 2: Camelback Road Improvement
- π Location: Camelback Rd., 24th St. to 40th St.
- π§ Project Type: Local Agency (City) Resurfacing
- π Notable Features:
- Adaptation of rehabilitation strategy from conventional 1-inch overlay to localized 4-inch deep repairs for severely distressed areas
- Removal and replacement of deteriorated median landscaping, including new irrigation and desert-adapted vegetation

Project 3: Street Maintenance Slurry Seal
- π Location: Greenway Road/Greenway Parkway to 16th Street/20th Street

- Large-scale application of 15,000 tons of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) in Arizona
- New testing protocols using Hamburg Wheel Tracking (HWT) device to assess abrasion, raveling, and rutting resistance
- Collaboration with Arizona State University (ASU) to develop guidelines for the effective use of 100% RAP in pavement applications
